OCT scanner.

Here at Monnow we take the eye health of our clients very seriously. Our latest new equipment ensures complete peace of mind because it can detect any serious eye conditions earlier so that treatment can be done faster.

The equipment, called an OCT scanner, is usually only available in hospital eye departments; Monnow are the first optometrists in this area to offer this test.

The scanner takes 3D pictures of the different layers of your eye, using technology similar to an ultra sound scan. The retinal camera used by other opticians only gives a 2 dimensional image, so the information is not as detailed and diagnosis of any potential problems is not as accurate.

Our optometrists, Helen, Barbara, Cerys and Mike are all trained to use the scans to check for serious eye problems, including glaucoma and age related macular degeneration, during your routine eye examination. Should they detect either condition this leads to an earlier hospital referral and treatment by a specialist, ensuring your eyesight is protected. The eye specialist at the hospital will be given the information from your scan at Monnow Eyecare. We can explain to you our findings using the images of the different layers on our computer screen.

The new OCT scan is included in our examinations if you are on our Eyeplan scheme or a private patient. If you are an NHS patient there is a small additional charge to include this scan in your examination. The scan gives you the best possible healthcheck for your eyes, giving our clients complete peace of mind about their eyesight. For all appointments please ask our receptionists Glynis or Felicity for a longer appointment to allow the time for the additional check with the OCT scan.
