You don’t always need to travel to a hospital for specialist eye care. Where appropriate, our services allow you to receive expert assessment and ongoing monitoring in the familiar, comfortable surroundings of your local opticians.

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye and plays a vital role in your vision. Changes to the retina can affect your sight, sometimes before you notice any symptoms.
At Monnow Eyecare, our specialist-qualified optometrists provide medical retina assessment and monitoring, using advanced imaging technology and working closely with Royal
Gwent Hospital and Hereford County Hospital when further care is needed.
Our service is available through NHS Wales and is free to eligible patients living in Wales or registered with a Welsh GP.
Retinal conditions can develop gradually and may initially cause few noticeable symptoms. Regular monitoring can help identify changes early.

At Monnow Eyecare, we understand how worrying a
glaucoma diagnosis can feel. That’s why we are proud to host dedicated Glaucoma Clinics here in Monmouth, working in partnership with the Royal Gwent Hospital and Hereford County Hospital to bring specialist care closer to you.
These clinics enable us to monitor both diagnosed and suspected glaucoma patients, using secure remote links to the hospital for fast, joined-up care.
You will be seen by one of our two specialist-qualified optometrists, both holding advanced accreditations in glaucoma care. Their expertise means fewer delays in follow-ups and clearer advice on treatment options.

Your appointment is relaxed and one-to-one, giving you plenty of time to talk about how your vision affects your daily life and if you live in Wales or are registered with a Welsh GP, you may also be eligible for a fully funded NHS service.
Everyone experiences sight loss differently. During your assessment, we’ll take time to understand:
Where appropriate, suitable patients may be provided with specialist low vision aids free of charge on loan, through the Welsh NHS low vision service. These may include magnifiers for reading small print, high-powered or specialised glasses
and portable electronic devices that enlarge text.
We’ll show you how the different options work and give you the opportunity to try them during your assessment. The aim isn’t simply to give you an aid. It’s to find something that genuinely works for you.
Monnow Eyecare can also certify eligible patients as sight impaired / severely sight impaired, therefore eliminating long hospital waits for the same service.
Sight can change, and we’re here to change with you. As part of our low vision service, we offer regular follow-up appointments to check that your aids are still helping and to update your care plan as needed.
