At Monnow Eyecare, we understand how life can change when your eyesight begins to fade. Reading becomes harder. Daily tasks take longer. Confidence and independence can suffer. But low vision doesn’t mean giving up on what you love.
Our Low Vision Assessment service is here to support you. With expert guidance, specialist tools and real care, we help you maximise your remaining sight and keep doing the things that matter most.
We are proud to offer this free service here in Monmouth, as part of a government-backed scheme for residents in Wales and patients with a Welsh GP. And just like everything we do at Monnow Eyecare, it’s delivered with patience, clarity and kindness.
Low Vision Care at Monnow
Free support for those who need it most.
If you live in Wales or are registered with a Welsh GP, your low vision assessment is completely free. We encourage anyone who is struggling with reduced sight to get in touch early. The sooner we assess your needs; the sooner we can help improve your quality of life.
Low vision care at Monnow Eyecare focuses on more than eyesight. It’s about helping you feel in control again. Our patients often tell us they felt reassured from the moment they walked in.
This is not a rushed check. It’s a calm, one-to-one session that puts you at ease and gives you real tools to feel more independent.
Personalised Vision Rehabilitation
Tailored to your needs and your life
No two people experience sight loss in the same way. That’s why we create a custom plan for every patient, based on your lifestyle, goals and how your vision is changing.
The aim is simple: to help you use the vision you still have to its fullest. Whether that’s reading labels, using a mobile phone, writing, or enjoying your hobbies again, we’re here to find solutions that work for you.
Everything is explained clearly, with time to ask questions. We take pride in helping you feel confident, not overwhelmed.
Free Advanced Low Vision Aids
Practical help that really makes a difference
Thanks to support from the Welsh Government, we are able to offer a wide range of specialist vision aids completely free of charge on a loan basis.
These may include:
- Magnifiers for reading small print
- High-powered or specialised glasses
- Portable electronic devices that enlarge text
- Lighting solutions to improve contrast and reduce eye strain
We’ll talk you through what each tool does, and you’ll get the chance to try them during your appointment to see what feels right.
Visual Impairment Certification
We can now certify (sight impaired /severely sight impaired) people with visual impairment irrespective of their eye disease if they meet the certification criteria. Certification is the pre-requisite to registration with a vision impairment. Registration ensures access to services and support aimed at maintaining a person’s independence, inclusive of that offered by Habilitation officers and Rehabilitation Officers for the Visually Impaired. Patients registered as Sight Impaired (SI) or Severely Sight Impaired (SSI) automatically qualify for the Service.
The certification also has additional functions. It allows the collection of epidemiological information about the incidence and causes of certifiable sight loss in the UK. In Wales, the certification is used to indicate prevalence of certifiable vision impairment and is recognised by the Department of Work and Pensions as medical evidence of sight loss.
Occupational Therapy Support
Learn how to use your vision aids with confidence
Having the right tools is only part of the picture. Our team also provides practical training to help you use your vision aids safely and effectively in everyday situations.
From positioning a magnifier to using a video magnifier for reading, we’ll guide you step by step so it all feels manageable and useful.
We want you to leave feeling capable, not confused.
Ongoing Monitoring and Support
Because your needs may change over time
Sight can change, and we’re here to change with you. As part of our low vision service, we offer regular follow-up appointments to check that your aids are still helping and to update your care plan as needed.
You’ll also have access to the latest techniques and tools as they become available. That way, your care stays current and focused on your wellbeing.
