Orthokeratology Lenses

Clear vision. No compromise. Day or night.

At Monnow Eyecare, we believe everyone should enjoy clear, comfortable vision that fits their lifestyle. That’s why we offer a specialist service in advanced contact lens fitting, including Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) night lenses.

This treatment is especially popular with patients looking for freedom from glasses or daytime contact lenses, and parents wanting to protect their child’s sight from worsening short-sightedness (Myopia Management). Our patients love the confidence it brings, and the care they receive throughout.

What is Orthokeratology?

Lenses worn while you sleep. Clear vision when you wake.

Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, involves wearing custom-made lenses (Using Myah Scanner) overnight that gently reshape the front of the eye while you sleep. By morning, you can enjoy clear vision without needing glasses or daytime lenses.

It’s a non-surgical, reversible alternative to laser eye surgery, and is particularly effective for children to help slow down the progression of myopia (short-sightedness). This means clearer vision now and a reduced risk of eye complications later in life.

How Does It Work?

The specially shaped lenses work overnight to reshape the outer surface of your eye, correcting short-sightedness and certain levels of astigmatism.

  • Vision typically improves within a few nights
  • Full correction is usually reached within 7 to 10 days
  • If you stop wearing the lenses, the eyes gently return to their original shape within the same time frame

This makes Ortho-K a flexible and non-invasive option for managing your sight.

Is It Safe?

Safety is a top priority at Monnow Eyecare.

  • Ortho-K lenses are made from highly breathable materials suitable for overnight wear
  • After use, they must be stored in disinfecting solution for at least 6 hours
  • When handled correctly, the risk of infection is very low and similar to that of daily disposable lenses
  • These lenses are designed specifically for safe overnight use - this is not the same as wearing normal lenses while you sleep

Our highly trained team will guide you through every step, and you’ll always have our support should you need help at any point.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Ortho-K lenses can correct:

  • Up to -5.50 dioptres of myopi
  • Up to -2.50 dioptres of astigmatism

They are not suitable for those with:

  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Keratoconus
  • A history of corneal surgery or significant eye trauma or infection

They can also be used for monovision correction in some patients with presbyopia.

Benefits of Ortho-K

Patients who choose Ortho-K often tell us how life-changing it feels.

  • Complete freedom from glasses and lenses during the day
  • Perfect for sport, swimming, outdoor life and busy routines
  • Fewer symptoms of dry eyes and discomfort often caused by soft lenses
  • A more sustainable solution - just four lenses per year compared to hundreds of daily disposables

For children aged 6 and above, Ortho-K can be especially valuable:

  • Helps slow down the progression of myopia
  • Reduces the risk of long-term eye complications linked to high prescriptions

Many parents feel reassured knowing they are protecting their child’s sight for the future.
